I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and feel you are right. My dad even said it was a K frame 66 but those are stainless. So I am wondering what the numbers are that match the weapon. I would like to buy one just like the one my dad bought.

The model number and serial number stamped in the yoke cut are incorrect and irrelevant. S&W is known to mis-stamp various models and sometimes serials. The official serial is on the butt frame. Also, the Model 28 is an N frame with a shroud around the extractor rod. It is pretty clear there is not shroud and it is likely the frame is a K frame. So, I hope that clears everything up for you and others.
Thank you much. I will start looking.Well, the correct numbers are the serial on the butt of the gun and it is a Model 17-3. So, you want another Model 17-3.
I think somehow, the incorrect picture of the yoke cut was added to the pictures. The image has a copyright stamp saying "Guns International" so that image is off the internet. That image most definitely shows a portion of the extractor rod shroud and in the OP's first pictures you could see the edges of a couple of charge holes in the cylinder, too large to be a .22LR. It's obvious when the entire gun can be seen it is a M17, and once the OP has the gun in hand it will be clear that there is not a M28 stamping, nor a N frame "S" serial number in the yoke cut.Welcome to the forums from the cotton and peanut covered plains of the Wiregrass! …I am gunna say this one more time. My father bought this gun new. It hasn’t ever been to a gunsmith and it is one gun. I shot it whenever I wanted. So if you don’t know anything else to say but that it is two different guns save your’s and my time and don’t respond.
Glad you are going to stop saying it is the same revolver because it isn’t. The image with the Model 28-2 stamp clearly shows a reinforced ejector rod. None of the other images even suggest one.
Sorry to burst your bubble but, something is amiss.

My humble apologies!!! I thought you folks were being jackasses until I zoomed in on the picture and saw the guns international.com logo. I sent that picture my brother showing him where to look for the mod #. He either sent it back to me or I just tagged it in the upload. I am the jackass here. But, I am just a man. Lol
Seens like pic of 2 different guns with 2 different serial numbers.......Are we being played?.....There's never been a K***** serial number on a N frame gun. The pics shown are from 2 different guns.
it is two different guns. I uploaded the wrong picture thank you for your help.
You are correct my error.Seens like pic of 2 different guns with 2 different serial numbers.......Are we being played?.....There's never been a K***** serial number on a N frame gun. The pics shown are from 2 different guns.
Thank you much, however I did upload a picture of a different gun. Either me or my brother made an error but I think I have to own this one. You know your weapons and are very tolerant of ignorance. I am just glad that I listened to experience.Without a shadow of a doubt; my favorite internet threads are started be people who ask a question but are convinced they already know the answer. And, are prepared to get huffy about it when the responses don't match what they "know". 😂
