It seems an old gunsmith I met today told me during our conversation that there was a series of 639 semi auto pistols that had the rounded trigger guard that was made for the U.S. Navy, but never were issued. Does anyone know if this is true and if so what would the serial number range be? I am curious this old guy really seemed to know his Smith and Wesson handguns. if I can verify this as true I will have a new search on my hands

Pg. 292 of the S&W catalog, 3rd edition says there were round trigger guard models made in early production, the square trigger guard came in the later productions.
This pistol was only produced for 4 years, with no specific time frame listed for the conversion to the square trigger guard.
