  1. S&W Revolvers 1945 to Present
Hi, I'm in the market for a 4" revolver for IDPA. I've narrowed down my options to these two: PERFORMANCE CENTER® MODEL 686 4" BARREL | Smith & Wesson (smith-wesson.com) PERFORMANCE CENTER® PRO SERIES® MODEL 686 SSR | Smith & Wesson (smith-wesson.com) I can't try shooting either of them before...

Hi, I rented a pre-lock 686 at the range that most of the time randomly fired 0 to 2 of the 6 shots. The unfired rounds had shallow primer strikes. But it fired almost every time if I loaded only one round and shot it in single action. I used .357 Magnum 142 gr FMJTC commercial rounds. Do you...

I was fortunate enough to find a gentlemen at the gun show today selling his 4" barrel 686 no dash revolver. SN AFJ6XXX. It was at a very fair price so I brought her home. Been searching for a bit about the age. It has wood S&W grips and the box, no papers. She'll be a shooter so I am not...

My wife and I love the red ramp on the 686, but we'd like something useful at night and like the idea of the tritium sight. We're both very accostomed to the red ramp aiming, so I'm not sure if there's a red ramp/tritium combo front sight, or if we're just better off with a tritium dot only...

Hello all, Seeing how my first revolver love is the 686 (7rd) I guess I will ask the group for where it first shows up. I’ve seen the charts of what DASHs mean and that the “Plus” came out in 1996. So -4 can have the 7rd, but what about a -3? Just wanting to get an idea of any pre-Plus releases...

I have a Smith & Wesson 686 no dash. I’ve owned the revolver for a couple of years now, and it been a pleasure to shoot. Recently, the cylinder lock decided to stop engaging. I did a deep clean (fully disassembled) and found it was very clean and not the problem. I did notice, with the hammer...

The Performance Ctr 686 revolver has a different surface material and I would like to find forum members with experience in cleaning this gun. Specifically I am having a difficult time getting the powder marks off of the outside of the cartridge, and especially the front edge of the cartridge...

These Model 686-4’s were made from 1992 to 1996 and then shipped to Germany from 1993 to 1996 for distribution to the European market. They were first worked over by S&W's Performance Center where a match barrel, target hammer, and target trigger were installed and fitted. In Frankonia, Germany...

I joined the S&W (and revolver, for that matter) club with a used Model 10-10 courtesy of our "friends" at the California Department of Corrections. I love it, but I'm looking to upgrade to a proper .357 Magnum revolver and get a revolver with better sights at the same time. Currently, I'm split...

I found a 686-6 this morning in a configuration I have not seen before. It is a Talo offering. Model 686-6 7" barrel, grips marked 357, and unfluted cylinder. The SCSW mentions them but doesn't say much. I suppose I could email or call Talo Distributing to ask how many were sold. That is always...

My 686 has a crack near the hammer on the frame. It is cracked all the way through the steel. I have only shot 38 special and 357 standard rounds. The gun is approximately 22 years old and I am the original owner. Any one ever seen this happen before.
