S&W Shorty 40 HELP! can't get slide back on!

Took down the 40 and the slide won't go back on. I cant get the middle lever to depress far enough down and didn't want to force it! What should I do?

Push that riser down with your finger. Then slide it on.
    Lost in the woods.

I keep doing that but it won't sit flush enough for slide to roll back? Should i slam it back real hard or will it damage something?

I don't have one, but it sounds like you're binding on something. Are you certain the internals are in the proper alignment and directions? Also, does the trigger need to be in the 'fired' position in order for the slide to be returned and it might be cocked (or reverse order)? I've had different semi-autos where that and/or the hammer had to be in a certain position. Do you have the manual?

I had a s&w 1911 with the series 80 safety. I had to get a running start to get the slide to go over the lever every time. what a pain in the butt. and you couldn't touch the grip safety while you reassembled the gun because that's what caused the lever to rise.

I have the manual and it just says to take slide off with safety in fire position! This gun hasn't been fired before so i don't know! I have a model 59 and 39-2 and they go back together just like this one. I tried the trigger in various positions but still no luck. The lever will go down almost flush but just not enough to pull the slide back.
