What to do with Social Media and Big tech

Like most here, I'm sick and tired of our Social Media Overlords preferentially banning speech they don't like, skewing search results towards certain ideological views , colllecting data and using it for political ends.

It's obvious something needs to be done. So, a Poll! (sounds like fun)

    Should we :

    1. Regulate them like a utility: Government regulators go in and remove all bias from search engine algorithms, ensure 1 st amendment protections apply etc.

    2. Break them up. Their power is too concentrated. Split them into a bunch of little companies and let the market drive success

    3. Do nothing- they're private entities, the Feds have no business messing with business

Do nothing and let them hang themselves in the courts.
As long as they allow anyone and anything, they can claim to be a platform for public discourse. As soon as they ban users or pull content for violating their rules, they become editors and responsible for their actions and inactions.
We don't need the government making new rules. That's just asking for trouble.

Don't do anything, nobody is forced to use them.
Everything that happens is either endurable or not. If it’s endurable, then endure it. Stop complaining. If it’s unendurable . . . then stop complaining. Your destruction will mean its end as well.

    Hey Del,

I think some regulation may be in order.

Look at what has happened to TV since it was "de regulated".

The monthly fee (for TV) has gone from $10/month to $150+/month.

Programs (that the subscriber is PAYING through the blamed NOSE for) only have 18 minutes of programming in a 30 minute show. 12 minutes of ads!

The "Cable/Satellite Co.'s" are gouging the SUBSCRIBER and the ADVERTISER!

If you look at this thread...you will see what the advertisers are doing on this very FORUM! https://www.smithandwessonforums.com...pet-peeve.html

I suggest you read this thread in particular Post #16. (our Forum Members are being "targeted")

The only regulation I believe is in order comes by way of them not being able to register as a "Platform" if they are going to act as editors of content. The big tech giants clearly do control content that favors their political beliefs (editor status), yet because they enjoy "Platform" status, they are immune from lawsuits. If they want to act like a media or news outlet, fine, but be subject to actions taken by aggrieved parties seeking legal restitution and not be allowed the governmental protections shielding them as exists today.

I'm for a free market and freedom of association.

If a baker doesn't want to bake a cake for gay boys wedding it should be his decision to make absent government coersion. Same with FB providing their services. That said, FB shouldn't be coy about it. Just like the baker, FB should be upfront about their position that they don't welcome conservatives. Ok... fine. The void will be filled by the free market.
