I've always admired Mr. Powell. A soldiers's soldier who not only served his country well, but knew better than to try to run on a party's ticket as a politician. Also seemed to speak his piece when serving in the Bush administration, even knocking sparks with others in so doing. I may ask for the book this father's day. Thanks for the notice, gearchecker.

I will pass on his book. One, I think he got to his position due to his race. He started off in ROTC in the City of NY college system. I think to be in the position he was, it demanded the education of a military academy, West Point, etc.

He is a republican, but the first time out campaigned for and endorse Obama. Done. I could understand him having first hand knowledge of McCain of being an incompetent psycho, and not wanted him for POTUS, but to actually endorse Obama is over the top.

This came out while I was posting a thread and didn't see it. I'm no longer a Powell supporter or fan.

I think Mr. Powell was more excited about having a first black President than his conservative values... Mr. Powell is still a great man in my opinion and also very human...He made a judgement error in supporting Obama.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I respect that. Personally I can not embrace White House generals, Alexander Haig, Colin Powell or anyone else who skipped levels of command, received accelerated promotion, the lot. Being a successful National Security Advisor, technically a civilian job, is fine thing but not brigade, division, corps or army/theater/interservice command. In deference to General Powell I recall he commanded V Corps for about 5 months when recalled to the White House. Powell was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs; Haig had NATO.

Amen to that. My favorite Powell quote was when he was asked why he wouldn't authorize armor when the Army went in to arrest the Somalian drug lord " IT WOULDN'T LOOK GOOD ON CNN." I don't have a lot of 'warm and fuzzy' for a guy who is more worried about how HIS decisions will look on CNN than the lives of the Rangers.

I thought better of him at one time but power and image have corrupted the man. He thought it more important to have an historic event with the election of a black president than a competent black president. His interview on Fox last night stripped away what little credibility the man had. He would not admit to making a mistake in judgment.

It is sad. I have to agree with you. After learning more about Powell . He has lost any credibility he once had.
