Exclamation New member with cracked 357 686 frame

My 686 has a crack near the hammer on the frame. It is cracked all the way through the steel. I have only shot 38 special and 357 standard rounds. The gun is approximately 22 years old and I am the original owner. Any one ever seen this happen before.

Is it truly cracked or are you looking @ the line where the side plate fits into the frame? Can you post a picture of the crack? If it really is cracked (almost unheard of) S&W has a great reputation for their warrantee.

Call Smith & Wesson and see what they can do for you, IF it's truly cracked. But like Injunbro, I've never heard of this happening before at the location you indicate. My guess also is side plate. Pictures please.

First of all to the Forum.
Second, I agree with the Members Above; It is almost never heard of, and S&W has a lifetime warrantee.

If you could post some pictures it would be a big help.

Sounds like the side plate to me. Will need a picture to verify this.

    Welcome to the forum

Does the crack look like this? If so, it's probably the side plate seam.

I also have an early 686 I bought new in the late 80's or there abouts. I have fired many full house rounds thru it with no frame failures. S & W has a lifetime warranty. I would have a local knowledgeable person check it out. If it's really cracked then contact S & W.
    Welcome to the forum.

    Regards,
