Ok here is a scenario, you keep the cheap little old Smith with a ground off SN, one day a cop sees you, searches you or your property. ( for an unrelated issue) comes across your gun with defaced SN. Confiscate said weapon ( as they legally can, although you will get a receipt, to be used against you later ) shoot the gun and take bullet ballistics, and tie it to a murder ... Now after you finance everything you have, and your family leave because you are broke with Lawyer bills, you will remember me... Do what you like mate..

I'm no expert, I believe the 1968 "Gun Control Act" is the controlling law, along with the 1934 "National Firearms Act" before it. I'm providing a link for you, but from my read it's not completely clear about a gun being legal if it once had one and it's been removed, no matter the age. On the flip-side, having a gun made without a serial number (pre-1968), those are okay. If I were you I'd contact a local FFL that is well versed in the rules, especially those pertaining to your state. Personally, I'd not buy it and avoid the headache, but on the other hand, I wouldn't jump off a tall building in regret either if I did have it in my possession. The age of the gun is obvious, most police officers today, even in anti-gun areas (city/county/state), would recognize this isn't a modern firearm and is clearly an antique. I can almost guarantee you they wouldn't know how to open the action!

It is illegal to possess a firearm with defaced S/N.........it was also illegal for the Auction House to sell a firearm with a defaced S/N. I still don't understand how a firearm with a defaced S/N can be accepted for registration by an official registration agency (be it State, County, Local, etc).

    I could be wrong...................

Maybe one of our legal experts can/will shed some light on this issue.

you would know if you had registered it now I’m not calling you a “stranger to the truth” here, but an FFL is most gun store pick up points,(where paperwork is done) so I can understand this correctly, you bought a gun in an auction, with a ground off SN and registered it in PA without an FFL?
