This 16 year old kid stepped off the bus in the middle of the night to the din of several screaming Army drill sergeants, one of which would be teaching me how to be a soldier. We had the good old barracks buildings, 2 story wood with the coal fired water heaters, floors with linoleum with liberal lashings of Johnsons paste wax, and the kind of latrines Will Stockdale made famous. I graduated on the day Richard Nixon resigned. I could be trusted with hand grenades, a gen-u-ine assault rifle, but it would still be years before I would be trusted with a beer. I shaved each day with a plastic razor blade in a safety razor and did all kinds of things I never thought I could do. I completed my collection of all of the very best swear words as well. And I thought I had made it when I graduated from high school.

55 years in the past. One individual in our training platoon would later on be a MOH recipient.

33 years for me. I remember being woken up at 4am to the sound of people banging on trash cans yelling at us that it was time to get up, and I thought to myself "What did I get myself into?!" Would like to see some the old gang from boot camp again, and there were a few that I used to question how they even made into boot camp.

27 years ago for me. San Diego boot camp a similar experience with the DI's throwing trash cans. A few years ago I went and visited my son in law in Army boot camp on graduation day. Kinda cool how the cycles start over. You know I still raz him about being in the Army, now he is in Afghanistan.

40 years ago for me at Ft. Dix, N.J. Was back there in '99 for weekend drill with the PA National guard. Stayed in the barracks next to the one I did basic training in. Thank you all for your service to America.
