Oops..... The Day The Masters Burned...

It never made the news. Of course, this tragedy happened to a media company - a group of companies with connections.

In June, 2008 (eleven years ago) a major fire swept through a warehouse owned by Universal Studios, a location adjacent to the "New England" outdoor set used by Universal for film production.

Building 6197 was a 22,320 square foot warehouse that housed the master recordings of some of the most famous music in history.

While most of the space was occupied by NBC Universal's film and videotape library, one corner held an estimated 175,000 master audio recordings containing the masters of about half a million songs.

Here's a NY Times Investigative story on the never publicized loss:

I spent a few years restoring and digitizing historic masters of network programs, and can tell you that the truest and highest quality only comes from the master recording tapes. Each time an improved technology has appeared, most music owners have launched projects to transfer, re-master and sell higher quality copies of recordings. It would seem that for many of the world's most famous artists and their work, this has come to an end.

It's literally the day the music died.
    Cheers! Marc

Wow, that's an absolute shame. Sometimes I wonder if there's any point to some of this. The current crop of kids don't seem to have or care about any connection to the past. But then our grandparents probably said that about us.
