    Extreme Long Range

Poking around on the ELR forums, thinking wistfully about the potential fun of a SA ELR rifle

    Found this amusing meme:

Yep, even the brass for that round costs an arm and a leg.

I've been loading 338 Lapua rounds for my Savage 11-111 Long Range Hunter for quite a while and they don't cost 5 bucks a round either. Even with Lapua brass, I use Lapua, Nosler and sometimes PPU, per round cost is about 2 bucks, give or take. I use H1000 and Federal 215 primers and usually 250 or 300 grain Sierra or Berger pills. 250's give a higher muzzle velocity, 300's have way more felt recoil. Once n a while I load Swift A frames too.

Not a plinker by a long shot but not 5 bucks a round either, well maybe if you buy factory ammo. I don't.

Extreme long distance for me is 35 yards, much cheaper to load for.

I tend to rely on electronics quite a bit but learning how to 'dope the wind' is important. My scope on my 338 has to be dialed into the distance I'm shooting at so a good rangefinder is also important. I use a bullet drop chart (dope sheet) I carry with me that tells me the approximate drop at a certain distance but wind still plays a big part so I have a Kestrel wind meter too. Lots of things come into play past 500 yards, like elevation, wind, barometric pressure and even ambient temperature.

Reason I bought the Savage 11-111 in the first place was the advertisement that Savage used at the time.... The 11-111 Long Range Hunter, shoot into the next zip code'... and you can.

I figure when I'm 70, that distance will be good for me too.

Here's a pretty good video series on extreme long range shooting. This is the first one. At the 2:15 mark he makes a 1,130 meter cold bore shot on a beer can using a .338 Lapua. The guy's got to know something. I've watched almost all the videos and there is a lot of repetition, but if you have the time it's worth it.
