I'd bring my M4 carbine with a couple of 30 rounders full of whatever 45 - 55 grain 223 I could find

I don't want the rifles report to scare them all to death kubvcabo .
I want to take them out one at a time, gotta have a bit of fun next weekend.

It's not just the problem, the solution might just be a lot of fun.
Remember, these marmots are my friends problem. It's at a lake house over looking Lake Coeur d'Alene. I like the slow solution. It might just take all summer!
Very witty Bob, thanks

You need to get the CCI Velociters, these things are extremely accurate and potent.

This would be my answer. I tried a few rounds on rabbits, and stopped. Lost too much meat with a body shot, totally destroyed the heads on head shots. Nasty little round for whatever it hits.

GQ, you're right the fun of it will last all sumer!.

I have stepped up to 22 mags for groundhogs in backyard. Last year I shot 9 of them w/22 lr, but the momma, BIG mamma, took 2 shots, first wasn't head shot.

So this year I'll be waiting with the 648 with WIN 22 mag Supreme HP ammo.

Anyway, GQ have fun with whatever you use.

They can be tougher than you think. Good shot placement is important. I'd vote for CCI Velocitors or the new Winchester version of that is similar. A .22 mag or .223 would be even better.

Where do I find the Velociters?
My local super sporting goods store doesn't carry them. Does anybody know if Cabela's carry's them or not? Is there an online source that I can get them from pretty quick?

Midway lists them, but they are out of stock. I think any old .22 LR will do if you confine yourself to head shots (or good cns shots). I have seen them hit and run off wth a 9mm and .223, and I have seen them drop and not move with a hit from Federal bulk pack .22, .223, 30-06, 6mm, .45 ACP, etc. Put the shot in the right place and it won't matter. Put the shot in the wrong place and your choice of ammo may bail you out (but it probably will not). Good luck and have fun.

marmots are ground hogs. color variations and size vary with local. I have heard of grounds hogs reaching 20+ pounds. I have never seen a marmots that big. Back when I was a kid we hunted marmots at 10,000 ft plus elevation in Colorado. We used 22's all the time and had no problem killing them.

I am getting ready for a trip over to Idaho for some rockchuck (marmot) shooting. I will be using a 220 Swift. That is my kind of .22.

If you are within 50 yds, just about any accurate 22 will do the job, just make sure of your shots and pop them in the head. Keep one of your empty 22 shells and blow across the top of it to make a whistle. That will often make them sit up and look around, giving you time to shoot.
