I was looking around for a coyote gun the other day when I found a Savage bolt action in .222 Remington. I really have never dabbled with this one, has anyone else played around with it? Ammo seems pretty easy to get at every gun shop locally, and I imagine reloading cannot be too hard.

It will make for a great coyote gun. I have a couple Remingtons in .222, and a scoped Contender. I really enjoy shooting the .222s, low recoil, mild report, etc. Reloading for them is cheap also.

Great little round that was developed by the bench rest shooters in the late 60's. My shooting buddy at the time bought a Savage ln .222 when first anounced. It was not much for pretty but it was deadly.

The .222 Remington is a fine varmit round out to about 250 yards. I've got a Model 70 Winchester in .222 Remington. Mine favors 50 and 52 grain bullets. Recoil is next to nothing with the weight of the rifle and scope. I haven't ever tried it but I think it would easily and quickly take a deer with a head shot inside 200 yards.

Last I knew Mike Walker of Remington designed it in the early 50's and it was first chambered in the 722 bolt action. Those little Savage 340 bolt guns were in- expensive but great shooters. I have a 222 in a Rem 788 and its a tack driver. The 222 was a real benchrest favorite until the advent of the PPC rds. Still a good cartridge and I have shot several coyotes with mine use the Nosler B Tip bullets and its good to 300 yds. The popularity of the rd has faded with the 223 replacing it but it it still a rock solid performer. bobw

here in Australia the 222 is a great round used on dingoes My dad was given a Parker hale in 222 for finishing school in 1966 by his dad and still has it today, he has shot many dingoes and pigs with it over the years. doug

Our neighbors here in SC used the 222 for deer all the time. They only did head/ neck shots and very rarely missed and when they connected had venison!

.222 has a longer neck than .223 and for handloaders that's an advantage. Might be the reason for it's accucary reputation. Better bullet seating. Case capacity is about the same.
