Found a solution for shooting with corrective lenses

When age first tapped me on the shoulder with the need for reading glasses, I was able to solve the issue by the use of drug store “readers”. That has worked for about 7 years now, however I literally only needed them for close-in work as they would distort my longer range vision. This has been a problem when shooting a handgun as I need the glasses for my front/rear sights, but it would really screw up my target view. I’ve tried corrective safety glasses from the hardware store which are essentially bifocals and that didn’t really work well as I would find myself holding my head at an unnatural raised angle to work things into place. Well as things would have it, my “readers” now seem to not be a hindrance at reasonable distances, so using them to shoot isn’t as much of an issue, but they don’t provide protection. So last week I shopped the internet and found safety glasses that fit over regular glasses. They arrived this afternoon (one pair of shades and two different clear models) and all seem to fit the bill with practice sighting in my house and yard. I’m encouraged by what I’m seeing so far (pardon the pun!) and can’t wait for cooler days to try them out. On the downside, I’m not jumping up and down by the fact that my eye-sight continues to weaken, but if this is partial payment for a good and blessed life, I’ll gladly pay the toll!

I saw these items a few years ago through a more expensive source, but they look like they might be useful for non corrected safety glasses. they come in different strengths and if your eyes are not matched (like mine) you could get 2 different strengths.

This is an interesting thread and prompts me to ask a question that maybe someone will know the answer to.
Can corrective lenses change the dominate eye?
I'm left eyed dominate and shoot right handed and wish I was right eye dominate.
I've read and heard shooters refer to shooting glasses, is this what is going on?

Rob, no idea about using artificial correction to change eye dominance, but that's an interesting concept. My original deal was that as a younger man I possessed the eyesight of an eagle, but age has plagued me with something less today, shooting a handgun without some form of visual aid renders my shooting accuracy worse than ever! I suspect that as age continues, the vision will change with it and I'll do what I must to adapt. Maybe someone else can answer your question.

BC Being right handed and left eye dominant my self, a trick that has worked for me is to place a piece of cerand wrap over my left lens. This still lets the light in but makes my right eye focus.

Re: Found a solution for shooting with corrective lenses

I'm probably wearing this subject out but -
My main concern is for personal defense. I have covered my lenses, put tape over my eye w/limited success. It improves so far, but not enough to feel confident. What seems to be working is moving my site line from down my right arm (not really down, but closer to right arm) to the left arm and my dominate eye. The problem is compounded in totally dark environment (like home defense) because I can't see the sights at all. If it wasn't for the laser grips I wouldn't stand a chance, chances are good, I would think that the bad guy can't see any better. I just hope he can see the red dot on his chest, that I can see just fine.

Re: Found a solution for shooting with corrective lenses

My problem is needing corrective lenses to see clearly within arms length. Beyond that, no problem. But that leaves me with no other reliable fast sighting method than the lasergrips. I can't wear reading glasses to bed nor in the twilight. They also impair my distance vision. That makes my sighting choices rather limited. I have 5 pistols with lasergrips and practice with them regularly. They have done well for me for a few years now.

Thanks for the input 19&41, looks like we have the same problem, only different <G>. I can't find much writing about shooting in the dark. Might have time to put glasses on, might not. Do you have florescent sights, I can't tell any difference in sight reading at arm's length.

I have a 5946 with Tru Dot tritium sights. They are still relatively bright. I can, with staring at them make out the three dots in the dark. but in daylight they may as well be pieces of mohair stuck on top of the slide. I can't rely on them. A new set might work for you, though.

Re: Found a solution for shooting with corrective lenses

I've always been near sighted and need corrective lenses. I also need reading glasses for up close since I hit my 50s.
I now wear progressive (bifocals) lenses all the time.
I've been to several optometrists trying to find a solution to my vision and shooting and have never found an answer to the problem.
I shoot a handgun fairly often now, and rifles not so much.
Almost all my rifles have scopes but my military style long guns, such as the M1A, AKs, ARs etc, are peep sights.
I do OK accuracy wise, but not like I did when I was younger.
I will tell you that I believe things like goose hunting, where you try to see strings of geese off in a distance against a blue sky, will improve your vision for shooting.
Things like coyote hunting, where you try to pick up the motion of a coyote in grass or cover, and try to make out their outline, will also help.
Being inside all the time and looking at static objects, your vision will dull.
Not necessarily because of something physical with your eyeballs, but your perception decreases.
