What is the last thing you saw before closing your eyes

What is the last thing you saw before closing your eyes and jerking the trigger? I’ve often asked this while observing other shooters. One only asks that question with a smile and a friendly tone of voice not meant to be demeaning of the individual.

What I see firing a semiautomatic pistol is the POA (AKA-Point of Aim), muzzle flash, case ejecting, sights rising and sights return to the POA.

There are those that say they haven’t seen what I’ve described and reluctantly admit they may have closed their eyes.

Another associated problem is people tend pull/push their handgun downward anticipating recoil. When they learn to keep their eyes open this problem is resolved or minimized.

The two "fo-pahs" I find most prevelent are focusing on the target instead of the front sight, then jerking the trigger.

I have proven the point more than once with an empty chamber.

I love watching the hole pop thru the paper. It took my wife a while to get used to shooting with her eyes open. I asked her how she knew her eyes were open, and here response was that she saw the hole pop thru the paper. After that she's always had her eyes open. She want's to be certain to see when the bullet hits it's target.
I feel sorry for any BG's that cross her path. She'll see the hole pop open there too.

    Regards,
    Gregory

My firearms are an investment on my life.

The average response time for 911 is 20 min., the average response time for .357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

While it is subjective, it usually helps a great deal.....if you open your eyes when shooting! Bob

    Dennis ,

    It's always the basics .................................................. .......

I read this thread and thought , " Could I be letting bad habit(s) creep in ? " Nah .......... not me .

So at my range session yesterday I brought a short printed out version of some thoughts mentioned here .

    I read and re-read before I loaded em up . And re-read .

I stepped to the line , took a shot and said " I just winced " . And I think I've BEEN doing that for a spell .

It's always the basics . Time to rectify .

And guess what , I had a GREAT range session .

Now I must be honest here fellas .

The Prancing Pony kicked a** .

    I took my nickel 15 4" . A recently acquired beater blue 10 4" pencil for the first time . And a blue 19 6" that I haven't shot in a while .

I went by myself , because I had already decided that my efforts needed some examination even before coming across your thread .

I started out w the Colt Police Positive Special , shooting 1 handed , duel style ( ya never know when that skill might be needed ! )

That lil thing is very accurate , fun to shoot , until those little hard plastic grips start to work on you .

On to the nickel 15 . Nice , accurate but a bit less than the Colt . The small fake stags don't help much . Ouch .

On to the beater 10 . Well let's say that it is truly a beater . Need to get the Smithy to look at this one .

Next and last is the 19 . Can it redeem the Smith pride . In one word - YES !
This is a really nice shooter . Very , very accurate . Nice trigger . 6" barrel def helps , I must acknowledge .
A bit tighter groups at 15 yards , but much less fall off at 25 .

But I must say that the Colt of 1918 build , w a tall skinny front blade and combat groove rear sight was quite impressive .
I think it just earned some new more comfortable grips . If I can find any that will fit . The variations of grip size on these little buggers is problematic .
I think taking it to the next gun show may be the ticket .

BUT A FINAL CALLOUT TO DENNIS - thanks for a reminder , it's always the basics !

    Regards ,
    George

Anymore, with my lasergrips, I keep both eyes open with the pistol held about 3 inches lower than when using irons. It is interesting to see the things that my hands usually cover. The model 65 shows a lot of fire from the cylinder to barrel aperture. Such things don't tend to distract me, but it's just something I hadn't seen before.
