Good idea. I keep, because I use it, automotive break clean around for cleaning guns. If you get 1/10th of a drop in your eye you are down for the count. I now wear glasses when I spray it.
One of my co-workers was out of state recently on a visit and found himself in a potential domestic violence situation (ex-husband threatening an adult teen, etc, etc,) and even though local police had been consulted, he felt REALLY naked without his concealed carry as he was escorting this young man to/from school those few days. I’ll not mention the state, but it has some of the most strict gun-purchase laws that it would have been out of the question to pursue that option and he was unsure about the local rules around the purchase/use of pepper spray. I told him to go to the hardware store and buy some Hornet/Wasp/Yellowjacket spray such as what Bob K. recommended in Rick Biarritz’ thread yesterday in the Lounge.
Someone gave me this tip a few years back, I think it was an old friend of my dad’s, but I can’t remember for sure and reading the Hornet/Wasp thread yesterday made me think about recommending it. As Bob said, the spray shoots about 25 Feet, it can fill in as an inexpensive, legal, non-lethal self defense option if you find yourself in a pinch. This stuff really does reach out fast and packs a punch! If an attacker were to get a blast of that crap in their eyes from a safe distance, you greatly increase your chances of getting out of Dodge and seeking help!
I wish I'd have thought of this earlier in my life, my relationship with my ex-wife would have been much different!![]()

The Wasp/Yellow Jacket Spray was recently (within the last year) brought up on a self-defense program. It's advocates made a big point of this was a good home defense tool for those who were reluctant to have guns in the house. Both of my adult children now possess several cans of spray and I feel a little more comfortable with that knowledge. If you've ever had the wind blow some of this stuff back in your face, you'd readily agree, this is better than pepper spray.
My wife is uncomfortable with carrying a firearm in her visits to the mall, but that LARGE can of Bear Spray (unused after a vacation trip to the deep woods of Northern Idaho) she keeps in her purse provides a better than nothing degree of protection.
I guess my point is that I, among many others, are a strong advocate of possessing the sprays for an effective defense. Yes, there are many possibilities where it couldn't be used quickly enough to help but we also don't want to get hung up on the "what if's" and "this woulda been better" situations. Sure they exist but if you're dealing with gunshy people, you do the best you can. Mine are not Anti-'s, just uncomfortable with guns in their hands and quite truthfully, I'd rather they had less permanent solutions in their hands because of their inexperience.

I understand the sentiment behind the wasp spray, but there are far more effective options that don't have the drawbacks of a spray.
A good sturdy flashlight that can double as an impact weapon comes to mind, and it always a flashlight.... A steel barreled pen can do the same thing.
There are lots of options out there that are perfectly legal and don't scream weapon that can be very easily improvised with a little thought.
No doubt there are many options (I've carried a few unmentionables myself), but the beauty of the spray is it can be so effective at a distance! When I was younger I didn't recognize the value of physical space between me and someone who isn't a fan, but that's changed, particularly after watching my son's action over the last few years on the street. So, short of being able to sling lead down range, I like the option of disabling a problem well outside my personal space. The other thing is it's an easy sell to women as they're often not as keen on a firearm as us guys, plus there are simply and sadly too many states where the Facists have taken away the ability to enjoy true self-defense capabilities, full-well ignoring a constitutionally guaranteed right, which is of course a firearm.
On the other hand, it would bring me great joy to suprisingly unleash upon some worthless, unsuspecting ACORN petition-seeker waving an Obama re-election writ with a 'tactical ink-pen', now this has promise!![]()

An ice pick also offers little surface to grab if someone wants to take it.
