There are some pretty good ideas in this thread. If one doesn't get behind, keeping accurate records of a gun collection isn't so hard. The hard part is starting with several guns and having to do it all at once. (Don't ask how I know this..) Just make sure that the process is done in such a way that the records don't get lost.

I have no problem with keeping records electronically but the key is keeping them stored somewhere other than on a particular computer. The idea of emailing to oneself is pretty good as the records are actually saved somewhere else that can be accessed from any computer with the correct password.

I'd be a little careful of a flash drive for the same reason I no longer trust a particular computer's hard drive. It CAN be lost, or in some way damaged to the point that access is no longer possible.

Just a friendly word of advice for peterpistol. We do not pick on, or make fun of, other people on this forum. Be nice...

This is serious! I lost a friend this last year that prided himself in not even knowing how many he had. He did not share with his wife how to distribute/sell his possesions or even what he had. Yes he had quite a few (several hundred). Make your lists and wishes and plans made known to your loved ones. Have a plan or even several for the worst case .

I decided to finally make my inventory this last summer. I recorded model, caliber, serial number, purchase date and price in a spreadsheet. I'm lucky that at my place of work our computer drives are backed up every night, so I'm safe there. I really liked the idea of taking pictures of my firearms, so I'll add that this Christmas break.

    I agree. Nice idea.
