The S&W Autos 1st to 3rd Generations are held together with the slide stop like the 1911 but you do not have to remove the bushing on the Smith & Wesson pistols. The one piece recoil rod holds the return spring. The Slide stop pivot pin is the key to disassembly and sticks through the frame. UNLOAD THE PISTOL. Pull the slide back until the rounded forward part of the slide Stop aligns with the stop notch on the slide. Then pushing on the pin on the right side of the gun and remove the slide stop from the left side of the gun. The slide and barrel can be pulled forward and removed. The barrel and recoil spring and guide rod may be removed from the slide. Watch how you do this as the spring is under pressure and you need to reassemble it in the same way in the reassembly process.
With sights down reassemble the slide-- Replace the Barrel, recoil spring and guide rod. Have the Frame and slide stop at hand. With the Slide with barrel ect on a table sights down. Align the frame and slip it onto the slide. On the frame there are a series of levers that are right in front of the Hammer that have to be moved to get the frame onto the slide. Once the frame is on the slide you can pull it back until notch is aligned with the hole for the slide stop and then the slide stop can be replaced. BE CAREFUL THAT THE REAR PART OF THE SLIDE STOP FITS INTO IT'S HOLE AND DOES NOT SCRATCH THE FINISH ON THE FRAME.
