    4516 vs 4516-1

I got a 4516-1 today and noticed the mag said for 4516-1 only do not use in a 4516. What is the difference in the two guns?

There is no info in the S&W catalog that indicates any major changes between the two pistols. I would imagine the -1 magazine has a cut out for a magazine disconnect that will cause a possible malfunction in a non dash 4516. That would be my best guess.
Next time you're at the range load the pistol and drop the magazine. Try to shoot it. If it fires there is no mag disconnect. If it doesn't it has one.
Hopefully somebody here has a 4516 no dash model and can tell the reason for the warning.

I think SW beefed up the slides, did away with the frame step when they went to the -1 model. From what I gather, there was a problem with the original 4516 magazines, they were modified with the -1's by going with parallel feed lips, getting away from the original tapered no dash models.

Gearchecker, I found that my 4516-1 will fire without a mag inserted.

So will mine. I neutered the mag disconnect in mine. If you do pics or the bottom of your slide and of you ejector we might be able to tell whats going on.
