    Cool

    Welcome to the forum jk196.

1971-1972 would be the approximate range of manufacture.

It is an excellent firearm and was one of the firearms instrumental in the beginning of the semi-auto use in law-enforcement.

    Regards,

    Hi jk196,

    Welcome to the forum.
The Model 39-2 is an excellent 9mm pistol. The -2 modifications were recommendations of the Illinois State Police. They were the first state police department to arm with a 9mm semi auto pistol chosing The S&W model 39 for all officers Uniform, Plain Clothes and off duty. They soon had more information than anyone about the model 39 and how it worked. They were pleased but made some suggestions on how it could be made better thus the -2 modification. Starting in 1975 I wore a personally owned Model 39-2 as my police service pistol for about 5 years until a new Chief decided that the whole department ought to look the same and everyone needed to wear a revolver. If it were not for that order I would probably been wearing that model 39-2 until 1992 when the town finally issued pistols (the Sig P228)
