It very well may be the best pistol S&W ever made.
That just about covers it.
Here's my 5906

My firearms are an investment on my life.
When the time comes that I don't want a new gun, call the undertaker!
The average response time for 911 is 20 min., the average response time for .357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

You couldn't do much better than a 3rd Generation S&W.
The only negative for me is the weight of the stainless frame for everyday carry. Superb range/home defense pistol.

I carried the 5906 when I wa a deputy sherrif in Tyler tx...I do think they are a superb gun...true a little heavy but superb.
An excellent pistol and a great value. Mine needed only one thing to make it my go to pistol.

I bought my 5906 new in 1989 and it's been the best gun purchase I ever made. Accurate and totally reliable, I have not had a single problem with it. It is heavy but that makes it wonderful to shoot too. It can be carried in a good holster/belt combination but a 3913 or 6906 would probably be nicer to carry. This must be one of the better 9 MM pistols ever made.
Thanks bunches for the input, fellers. I'd heard and read a lot of good things about it, but wanted to get some opinions from folks who actually KNOW. Again, I appreciate your time and effort.

The old 3rd Gen S&Ws certainly have enjoyed a resurgence in the used market as of late. They are a good value at the price point where a lot of them are selling.
the very best ever 9mm out there heres mine![]()
Hard to add to the posts above, this gun has been carried on duty, feed thousands of rounds of ammo and the testimony speaks for itself.
I've had two of them, the first one I foolishly traded and the second one is babied like a Rolex. It is my standard choice when introducing people to shooting, and for the last few minutes at the range. It feels (and is) built like a Swiss watch.
