The 'Special Order' number may not be anything. I have a box with one on it and I don't think it was anything but a large order from a large distributer. BTW, as I understand it, the SO is a Julian Date
I've found a 629 Classic that has a "special order" number on the box label. Alas, I can see nothing special about it. I mean, of course its special because it's a S&W, but... It has RR, WO, TH, TT, 6.5 barrel, Hogue S&W grips, and the firing pin where it should be. Am I missing something? It's a -4. The six digit stock number (or whatever it is) is listed in "the book" so this would seem to be a standard model.
Also, what would the value be in your new of the woods? Is very nice, hard to say on stainless - 99% (?), but has been fired. No nicks/dings, perfect bore. Box but no other tools/paperwork. This would be my first Classic model.
Finally, how is the S&W etc marking made on the barrel? It almost looks like it would come off with agressive scrubbing.
Thanks for any replies.

Thanks, that's what it looks like. Right under special order is the number 4315, and then to the right of that is 4263. Either way the end of 1994, so that's about right based on the serial, I think, which is BSF7xxx.
