John, its good to hear from you and good to hear your getting better after the flu. That is one mean strain.

Your 686 sounds like a nice one. I had one with out the box that I sold for a bit more. You did quite well. The rear sight sounds proper for it as do the grips. I'd guess its an early 90's gun off hand. I'm sure someone with the standard catalog will chime in with a closer date.

enjoy it they shoot very well!

With a little help from SCSW 3rd, my best educated guess would be late 1990. I think you scored a pretty decent deal. The grips alone are selling for $130.00 used. A couple of years ago I picked one up at a pawn show just as you describe, except mine was not nib or even lnib. I bead blasted it and now it looks new. I have a 2.5, 3 and 4 inch 686. The 2.5 incher is by far my favorite.
    congrats on a sweet gun

This is mine when I got done with her

Hey John, you done good!! The slot is for a trigger stop, although they weren't always installed from the factory they still had the cut out.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, John. Well done on getting that one. I see them here for a bit more.

    Re: i picked up a 686-3

Hmmmm I cant recall right now about the w/o or plain black rear sight.
My opinion on your question about it being a conceal piece is - As great a gun as the 686 is, I am much more comfortable with a K frame for concealed carry. I prefer a model 65 with a 3 inch barrel. Just a hair more narrow than the 686 and the barrel doesnt have the underlug which just adds weight and bulkiness (2 thinks I dont want in a CCW). But like anything else to do with an idividuals favorite flavor of a gun, its all personal preference. By no means would the 686 make a bad carry gun, I just prefer the lighter more streamline K frame.
