    629-2 Classic Hunter ?

    Hi there,
want to start my membership with a question about a S&W 629-2 .
I have bought this gun just as a .44 magnum.

After some research i believe the model name is Classic Hunter.
    But I'm not 100 % sure about.

So what would you say ?

    PS.
I changed the Hogue rubber grips and fitted the Nill grips by myself.

    many for any info

    Theo

Heres my Classic Hunter 629-2... with breakfast. I also replaced the Hogues (but.. I have to admit the Hogues were more comfortable while shooting)

Forgot to welcome you to the board Theo!
Have you fired yours yet? Mine is deadly accurate. I mean the gun, not the breakfast..

    Re: 629-2 Classic Hunter ?

Originally the Classic Hunter in 44 mag was issued as 629-1 as the one I have and only 3000 6"ers were made then they reissued the Classic Hunter as -2 and I'm not sure how many were made. I believe yours is from the second issue. BTW they made the Classic Hunter in other bbl lenghts and also in 41mag and 357 mag. I've seen these others and passed on them and I'm really sorry I didn't get them now.

And yes it is deadly accurate... I got a Whitetail at 90 yards with mine a few years back.

I know you'll enjoy yours. I have the Hogues on mine since I shoot it a lot. I know most guys here always want to see the woods but they are not as comfortable as the Hogues. I opt for shooting mode.

    Dave,
I believe 2500 were made in the -2 configuration I have shown.
    1989.

    Re: 629-2 Classic Hunter ?

    Thank you for welcoming me.
hmmm, for the last six month it was just cold steel.
so i need some training now.

the gun is tuned by , what i think, the best S&W revolver tuner in Germany.
    Oskar Hanke from Cologne.

So i liked it to shoot very succesful on the 25 meter range .
I want to start training with some different reloaded ammo next month.

    Re: 629-2 Classic Hunter ?

    wow , fast info's !
so you think only 2500 were made. That is not much.
Somebody here in Germany told me that the No. BDS 4500 was produced appx. April 89 .

So you think i can be sure it is a Classic Hunter !?

......a whitetail at 90 yards ? that is appx 82 meter. wow.
Hunting in Germany is allowed only with long guns , so we can use pistol and revolver only for self defence or when hunting with a trap or for the final shot on wounded animals.

    Re: 629-2 Classic Hunter ?

    Theo,

I don't reload so I have settled on the Remington 240 SP for all my shooting and hunting. I have set the sights for 100 yards, but it will shoot high at this setting for shorter distances.

Dan, that figure sounds about right from my memory. The original -1s were made in '88 I believe.

Since the Rems are very expensive now I'm thinking about using the Win White box 240 JSPs, much less expensive. I'm hoping to get the same performance as the Rems.

Mine is my go to gun when I need to holster one of the 44s.

Theo too bad about the hunting rules there not letting you hunt with handgun. In Michigan that is all I carry now when I go out in the woods. And, yes it is a Classic Hunter the unfluted cyl and black ramp sight are some indication of that.

    Re: 629-2 Classic Hunter ?

    Boy, those bring back memories.

I had a -1 that was a great shooter but never liked the 6" tube. It was sold and my hunt for a 5" started. That was 2 years ago. I just got my 5" today. I still need to take pics and shoot it!!

    That breakfast looks mighty inviting!!

And Theo welcome to the forum!

Give me a Scotch, I'm starving!
