I find it amusing that they have gone to such great lengths to reproduce the ballistics of the old .38-40...

Perhaps that was exactly the goal and the packaging for use in a pistol is the difference. Interesting thread.
Rats, now I want a .38-40 of some kind.
If my memory serves a .38-40 is a necked down .44-40. My Grandfather carried a 1889 Marlin lever action .38-40 that served very well, supplied a lot of venison (& tons of smaller game). My brother now hunts w/ it. Grandpa also had a Colt SAA in the same round... it would be a very hard round to improve on.

Here's a few revolvers that may be of interest. The left one is a Mod. 610-2, 3 inch 10mm, the middle is a Mod. 646 40 S&W in 4 inch from the Performance Center, and the one on the right is a Mod. 657 3 inch .41 Rem. Mag.

the 10mm is my favorite all-around-round. I have been looking for the proper 610 for quite some time as well. The 310's can be bought at anytime around here so they lose a little bit of the desire. In all honesty, I feel that loading a wheel gun with a auto cartridge a bit...well off; unless its just a fun factor your looking for then by all means. Also check underwood ammo for some extremely potent 10mm to load up in anything you buy for this cartridge.
I find it amusing that they have gone to such great lengths to reproduce the ballistics of the old .38-40...I view of the fact that the real 10mm 180 grain load will do something like 1250 fps when fired from a 5" barrel, I assume that you're speaking about .40 S&W ammo and not 10mm.My thoughts exactly, Bro. I even went back and reviewed the ballistics on the 38 Winchester (38-40), pretty close match.

I have a S&W 610 5" and a Colt Combat Delta Elite. The original Norma 180gr. H.P is the hottest factory round in that cal. I've EVER fired, it's a real screamer and is certainly very capeable of taking Javelina, Boars, and if you have the confidence in your skills, Whitetails too-with the 610. You can handload to those Norma pressures, but I still covet my supply of the original Norma rounds as they are very hard to come by.

If the OP is interested in a small light 10mm Charter Arms just introduced the .40 S&W chambered Pitbull "Charter Rimless Revolver" that does not require moonclips, but relies on a patented star extractor similar to the discontinued S&W M547.
