    Hoss,

The finish looks 'bout right for one of the very few FHP factory nickle guns that shipped. How did you come upon that, can you give us the provenance?

    Cool

Standard Catolog of Smith & Wesson list 28-2 with satin nickel finish made in limited addition (5) as a sales sample for Adolph Black , Inc.

I believe the FHP had a 5" barrel and shipped in 1959 according to SCSW.

Then again this could have been a 28-2 that was refinished in satin nickel.

Is the serial number available ?

    Regards,

Are you sure that is a Model 28? If so the barrel has been cut to 3 1/2 inches or so. That is a standard barrel length for the Model 27. It is also possible that S&W mis-stamped the frame. I believe that to be more likely than a super rare nickle 28. Also, I can find no mention of 28s having barrels shorter than 4".
Well, I'm glad I ain't scared to be lazy.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a 28-2 that has been rebarreled and refinished.

A letter from Roy Jinks may be in order. Here's a link (FYI) Firearm History Request - Smith & Wesson

What kind of stampings/marks are on the grip frame sides under the stocks?

It is also possible that someone installed a Model 27 barrel and refinished to nickle. Barrel then would not be marked Highway Patrolman. Best way to decide what you have would be to spend $50 on a S&W letter. If you do, prepare for the mundane rather than the spectacular. And by all means let us know if it is something special.
