    S&W 642 Moon clips?

First off, Im new here. Second, this is my first S&W Revolver. So, I know pretty much nothing about these guns other than I really enjoy shooting them on the range over a semi auto pistol and I will be purchasing revolvers from now on out. That said, my question is....

Is the 642 milled from the factory for moon clips? I did some google searches and the best that returned was that the 642 "pro" from the factory was. From what I can find the only model of 642 falls under the "pro" category on the smith-wesson website. So could someone tell me if my 642 is milled for moon clips? If not whats a good speed loader for it? And for anyone else that has this gun, are there any upgrades that are "Must"

BTW I got this gun, with the intentions of purchasing a larger caliber conceal carry down the road. But for now I needed (felt more comfortable) with this for my wife for when I am not home (military)

So that also being said, what is another good model S&W for conceal carry? Whats a good model for target shooting? (something Id like to do for fun) Anyone recommend the S&W 617?

Id also like some opinions on the S&W 627 with the 4" barrel. Looks like it would be great for the house, and for the range.

The pro version is set up for moon clips, but a regular 642 is not machined for moon clips. You can use a HKS or Safariland speed loaders for it.

Any J-frame would make a good conceled carry gun.

The M617 is a awesome gun, if you get one you will love it!!

I do not have a 627, but I'm sure someone will come along and share their thoughts on it.

Thanks Hunter I appreciate the input. I looked into the 617 and I think from the $$$ Stand point it would be perfectly fine because it would basically pay for itself with the price of ammo, but other than that the 617 serves no purpose. I would like to have the 627 for the house, and to do some target shooting. I have read it is extremely accurate. But then again nothing is stopping me from getting both guns.

If you get into reloading and casting, all of your ammo will be cheaper, except you will be shooting more of it!!

I think that a 686 with a 2 1/2" or 3" barrel would be your best bet for personal carry, and home defense. You can use either the .357 Mag or the .38 +P ammo.....which ever you find more suitable to the situation. I also have several personal defense/home defense revolvers. I usually carry a M-36 2" during the warmer months, but use a M-10-7 2" when I can wear a cover garmet. I also have a M-66-1 2 1/2" for woods carry, mostly.....but it can also be used for home defense. You can never have too many!!! Bob
