Date of Production on M&P 38 Spl revolver

I picked up a 38 Spl revolver from a police department sale after the department switch to automatics. I would like to date the revolver. The box states it is a Model 64 Stainless Steel with serial number D6461XX which matches the gun. But the gun is stamped as a Model 10-6. Please help with identification of the revolver

    1973 for that serial but,,,
    A model 64 would be 1DX to 1DXXXXX
The 10-6 was made from '62 until the 10-7 came along in '67, and that would run through serials C622XXX- C999999

The serial and the model number seem to have a problem with each other

    Hi NavDoc,
Question--- Is the gun really stainless? Is it magnetic? I have seen revolvers that have an after market finish called Armorloy or copies of it that make a S&W revolver look exactly like stainless steel some are so good that unless you touch a magnet to it you would not guess that it was steel. The 10-5 pencil barrel and 10-6 heavy barrel were made at the same times from 1962 until 1977 when the gas ring was changed and they became 10-7 and 10-8 respectively. It could be that the factory stamped your gun wrong if it is indeed a stainles gun. Is your gun a pencil (light) barrel or a heavy one?
