How can you tell if a gun has been reblued?

A while back, I purchased a 38 M&P Model of 1905 - 4th Change Target Model. My brother looked at it for the first time a few weeks ago and he thinks it may have been reblued. How can you tell? I'm no expert, but I don't see anything fishy. I don't have any great pics, so you probably can't tell by looking at them. My brother thought that someone had done an excellent job of reblueing it (perhaps done at the factory?). He thought it looked too nice for an old gun that had been shot a fair amount.

Takes a lifetime of experience to be sure... and handling enough guns in the process until you know what the original finishes of the era looked like... (I've had folks say that the pre-WW1 finishes were re-blues).

In short, look for missing or partially obscured markings, things that are supposed to be flat that are now rounded, and things that are supposed to be rounded that are now flat.

There are other, less obvious things like blue coverage being commensurate with the loss of color hardening on the hammer & trigger and stock wear.

Get beaten in enough deals and you'll soon find out what to look for...

PS: Nice, early M&P Target you got there...

It looks to me like it may have been reblued, it is hard to tell with the markings though.

    Thanks for the replies.

My brother is probably right. He's been messing with guns for a long time and he has been screwed on these deals.

Even knowing the symptoms of reblueing, it still looks pretty good to me. Somebody did a nice job if it has been reblued. Hammer and trigger are not reblued, etc. I don't see sharp edges that are now rounded. Lettering is pretty crisp.

    Or a fraud...

Many guns that I have passed on, only to see later...as original !

Waiting on a fairly rare one to surface soon. I will expose it, soon as I see it..

For all of the hundreds of guns that my brother has owned, he's never had one of these old Smiths (mine's from around 1924). He's probably right, but I still wonder.....

It's often a chance, that you've got to decide on. Hopefully, you don't
get burned too bad.......or ....you've got something that's an exceptionally good buy.

A few years ago, I passed on a .357 N frame, in very nice condition, and at a good price, simply because I didn't have the necessary knowledge to make an intelligent decision.

A rebarrelled -1? Oh Gawd that would be horrible! Whoever would do that must be the anti-christ.
