By no means an expert on Schofields, I pulled out my copy of the Standard Catalog: "The serial number appears on the butt, rear face of the cylinder, both latch pieces, latch screw, barrel under the latch, and the inside of the right grip." page 98. Also read that the US was not included on guns produced for the civilian market.

S/N 3444 and 5476 are attributed to Frank James
2341 to Cole Younger
Jesse carried 366. S/N 273 is also associated with the James gang.

Finally, civilian models are rare and more expensive. Markings have been removed from some military models to look civilian!
