Welcome to the forum. Based on your description and the patent dates, that could be what is called a .38 Double Action, Second Model. It has an exposed hammer, right? There was a similar model called the safety hammerless that had an enclosed hammer. But it had different patent dates no the barrel and didn't enter production until 1887.

That's a semi-low serial number, so it probably dates to 1880-1881 or somewhere around there. The Double Action was introduced in 1880.

I have one as well mine is in the 99,### range it's in pretty good shape although a grip on one side has a crack on the bottom. I was wondering if anyone knew how to look up the serial number on it without having to pay for it. I wanted to get the history, the value, value and be sure everything is legal. Any ideas?Name: Camera(13) (8).jpg

to the forums from the Wiregrass! 1883-84. It's an antique so BATFE regs do not apply. However, your state may have different regs. Condition is hard to tell from your pictures. However, from what I see, it probably falls in the $200-300 value range.
