j,
Brother forum member Mick posed this same question to another AR 15 shooter and I thought it was a good one: What bullet weight and what's the twist ratio on your barrel?
For example, most 1 in 9 barrels seem to favor a 55 grain bullet.
Mike
So, I went to the range the other day, pulled out my AR and started sending em down range. With the rear peep centered I'm shooting six inches to the left. SIX INCHES! Now I'm not a marksman by any means, but I pulled off the flip up and tried a carry handle as well. Same problem. This is my fourth AR and all have them have shot dead on right out of the box. This one req'd 19 clicks to the right. Last time I checked, hurricane force winds don't visit the inside of a firing range to often. I took it to a local gunsmith and he agreed something was off.
Should I send it back to Smith & Wesson for a barrel replacement or just deal with my rear peep almost maxed out to the right?
Any suggestions appreciated =)
Thanks!
James

I'd contact S&W, I imagine they'll want you to send it back. My M&P15 was pretty close from the factory.

Using 55 grain rounds, 1 in 9 twist rate.

j,
I'd say 'bro nailed it. Call Springfield for a return tag, I reckon they'll make it right.
Mike
Well I got a shipping return label via email. She's going out in
tomorrows mail. Hopefully they'll just replace the upper and save all the work. I hear they're pretty good about just swapping broken parts. I just hope they ship back a centered rifle.

Update: Called S&W today. They informed me of a 3 week turnaround time on my barrel issue. That's a lot of fun to be missing out on ya know! Hopefully it'll be worth the wait =)
Tis Tuesday morning. Apparently yesterday (President's day) is considered a 'holiday'. I guess obamy takes the day off or something. Anyways, called S&W up. It'll be a three week wait to replace the upper on my AR.
Now I've heard stories where they give you a worse case estimate and get it back to you sooner - which I hope is the truth. A three week upper/barrel swap is a considerably long time.
The fact that they're busy doesn't cut it either. If multiple people are sending their new firearms back for failed parts, maybe QA need closer scrutinization...
All in all, we shall see...
J,
Give the service center a break, please. I don't mean to chap your hide, but nothing gets done over there on our time.
They're dealing with service work from all over the world. Not just from Podunk USA where I live. They service thousands of guns every day. Honestly, yours is no different than any other they need to service or repair.
I have a revolver over there on a recall repair right now, and I'm just as anxious to get mine back as you are in getting your AR back.
When it gets done, it's done. Not one moment sooner, I'm sad to say.
Service is based on when it came in the door, what station it needs to go to, and what the workload is when your AR get's to that repair/service station. It's not just a simple swap. They need to figure out exactly what went wrong, and make the decision to either repair or replace the malfunctioning part, or to replace the entire upper. It's at their disgression, not ours.
My revolver was sent in for a factory recall last week. You might think because it's "They're fault" I'd get higher priority treatment. To be honest that would be nice, but I'm not counting on it.
I guess because I'm an old man I've finally figured out what it means when somebody tells me that "All good things come to those who wait". I was raised in a family with 16 children. I had to wait for everything. I never liked it, but that's just the way it was. I've learned all about waiting the hard way.
All in good time. Please be patient, it'll get back to you as quickly as they can get it properly repaired.

Gearchecker

My firearms are an investment on my life.
When the time comes that I don't want a new gun, call the undertaker!
The average response time for 911 is 20 min., the average response time for .357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

Gearchecker,
Thanks for the words of wisdom. Patience is a wonderful virtue to have. I'm very much looking forward to the return of my rifle. The only part that really worried me was the knowledge that all of their firearms are fired and zeroed from the factory before being boxed and distributed. If this is true, that means someone fired my rifle with the windage knob almost clear against it's lateral boundary and said 'eh' and shipped it anyways.
I'll give them all the time in the world if need be - just so long that as when it returns to me it returns a working rifle.
