It's my understanding that when a weapon is test fired at the factory, it's little more than pointing the muzzle downrange and pulling the trigger. They're only checking for basic function and little more.
It needs to go bang (Or BOOM for the 460 & 500 magnums), and the casings should eject in the case of a semi-auto, or the cylinder should turn to the next index point on a revolver. I honestly don't think anybody is looking for the sights to be aligned properly. I've read posts here where a barrel is completly out of alignment to the point it can be discerned just by pointing the revolver downrange and looking down the barrel. S&W fixes them without more than a word, and paying all the shipping fees.
Now that it's back in their hands they'll go thru it pretty closely from top to bottom.

Just curious, did you ship it without any magazines when you returned it?
If you didn't there might be one or two in the shipment back to you. It seems to be reasonably common for them to return the AR's to their owners with an extra magazine or two.

    Well wishes,
    Gregory

The average response time for 911 is 20 min., the average response time for .357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

I hope that's not really the case. We're talking firearms here. Not mechanical pencils. A product which has to be respected because of the power it has.

I believe that if you're going to manufacture a product that has a very efficient capability to kill, please test it thoroughly before selling it. A company should never expand past the point of quality assurance in order to satisfy larger numbers of customers. I would have gladly waited a month and been rest assured from day one that I was getting a $1000+ firearm which had been competent from birth.

All said and done, I'm glad they're warranting it. But I have talked to the S&W reps and have been told that I'm one among MANY a customers who have shipped back their M&P15's for barrel problems. Hopefully they'll catch whatever it is they did and improve on it, like most manufacturers with good reputations do.

I just bought 2 new handguns that are both S&W's. One is a revolver and the other is a semi-auto pistol. The revolver (340 M&P) shows signs of only 3 cylinders being fired (Every other one). The Pistol (M&P 40) has one spent casing in an envelope with the test date on it.
I won't assume that they shot any more than what the signs indicate on either of those handguns.
Like I mentioned earlier, it just needs to go bang.
I'm absolutly certain that they pull a representative sample of each lot they produce for complete testing. (Probably no more than one of each 1,000 produced) But there is no way they test every one they produce much more than a single firing evolution.

    Regards,
    Gregory

Got my rifle back from S&W the other day. I was quite pleased to see that they had installed a new barrel. The flip up sight in the back appeared to be centered and everything looked kosher. Unfortunately, when I inspected the other side, a big chunk of blue was missing from the barrel about one inch in front of the A post. Son of a b. Called S&W. Shipped it back. Hopefully this time they'll QUALITY CHECK their product before shipping it.

And once again I stand by my original opinion. If you're going to manufacture a RIFLE which has power to be RESPECTED, do it RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. If you can't keep up the QUALITY then you've outgrown your ability to produce a FIREARM.

These aren't lego sets. They're weapons. Stay true or gtfo.
