    Extractor Pins Model 27-2

Took my Model 27 out for some exercise yesterday, while cleaning it last night I was using my air compressor and I saw one of the extractor pins fly out. Fact being stranger than fiction I found it. What should I use to hold it in place, or would I be better off to take it my Smith and have them replaced. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Ray

    RD,
You can probably buy the replacement pins from Brownells for nearly nothing(Plus shipping), and replace them yourself for 25% of what your smithy would charge you. And you could do it in a few minutes at home, instead of having to wait for days or maybe even weeks before you would get your M-27 back from the smithy.
Just a thought on the subject.

Here's what we used to use in industry when pins were a little "sloppy" in their mating holes, RD:

    http://www.akd-tools.gr/xmsAssets/Fi...octite_601.pdf

    LoctiteŽ 603

As long as the holes for the pins aren't "wallowed out" too bad (and I can't see those extractor star pins getting like that), this retaining compound ought to be a "quick fix" that should outlast you.

If you can't find any Loctite 601 or 603 Retaining Compound at your local Lowe's or hardware store, PM me yer snail mail, and I'll send ya an extra tube I've got hangin' around somewhere in the garage.

Thanks guys, I found some Loctite 271 in my toolbox last night and gave that a try. If I see the are loosening up I will try the 601 or 603.

    Ray

On a side note this gun will be heading down to Fords of Florida for their Master Blue in a month or two, I will be sure to tell them about the extractor pins, and have them repair or replace them then.

There's a tool made for staking these pins. You put the pin in the hole and then place the tool over the pin, a light hit with your 4 oz. hammer and the pin is peened in place. The one I have I got at the S&W plant a hundred years ago, it is marked 00267-02. I don't know if they are commercially available (I did a search and got nothing), but they are definitely the way to go.
