    629 Barrel replacement

    Hi Everyone,

I have a 629 with a 3 in barrel. I purchased a 4 in barrel to replace it with. My 629 doesn't have a pinned barrel. The 4 in barrel that I bought has a grove cut in the top of the threads that makes me think it is for a pinned frame gun. Can have it installed in my non-pin frame without problems or am I asking for trouble? Thanks to everyone who replies for your time.

As long as you are able to thread it in and maintain proper clearance between the cylinder and the forcing cone you should not have any issues.

The barrel threads on all N-Frames are the same so a pinned barrel can be installed on a non-pinned frame and ViceVersa. That said, unless you have the special tools and know-how to do the job, it's best left to a professional. Otherwise, you can easily turn your M629 into a paperweight.

Do the 3" and 4" N-Frames take the same length ejector rod assembly?

I just checked and the ejector rod and center pin for 3" models have part numbers different than those for 4" & longer barrels so if you plan on a swap, looks like you need more parts.

Generally, you'll find it's more economically feasible to sell your 3" gun and buy a 4", especially when there is more involved than just a barrel swap.

+1 Scratch the barrel, or twist the frame, and your whole day is shot.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I am planning on having a local gun smith do it, but I wanted some unbiased opinions on if it would work. Yes, the ejector rods are different, and I will have to purchase another one. I have already invested money in a trigger job on this one, so I am not inclined to try and sell it and buy a 4"model. Besides, it has a non-fluted cylinder and I don't see too many of those around.
