DA Redhawk in .45 Long Colt

Debating on this one. The seller is asking a pretty stiff price, $500....and ordinarily I would pass. But this is one of the stainless 7.5" models with the rib that is set up for Ruger rings. It also has the replaceable front sight. I love .45 LC in my single actions, and believe that this is the only double action gun capable of handling the heavy loads that we all like to occasionally shoot. The massive cylinder combined with the way it locks up should be able to handle a steady diet of the heavyweight bullets with some power behind them. That and this particular specimen has a great trigger (something I've found wanting in other Redhawks that I've tried)....

Here's what John Taffin has to say about it...

Guess having it would give me an excuse to find some really big bullet molds ...

Anyone had one of these in either 44 mag or .45 LC? Likes, dislikes?

    Giz,
I don't have one, but I agree with you.. that would be an awesome gun to have!

The 45 Colt is my favorite caliber too..

    Giz,
IMHO, there's nothing else out there that's tough enough to do what you're looking for.
ESPECIALLY at what I consider to be a bargain price!

Re: DA Redhawk in .45 Long Colt

Had a Super Redhawk in .44 Mag. It was some sort of NRA issue. Laser enraving on it a couple places. Came with a scope on it. I could never get the eye relief thing to work for me and the line of sight thru a scope is way above line of sight for iron sights. I was never holding the gun in the right place to see a good sight picture. Every time I put the gun up and looked thru scope it was a 4 minute process to find target. I bought it for a Javelina hunting gun and spent hours sighting in on my Brittany dog. I never got used to the optic set up and it was some sort special package that I did not want to break up. I sold it.
As far as a shooting gun they are great, it would withstand anything you would be willing to load up. One of my shooting partners, friend of a friend, had one in 45 Colt and 454 Casull. His Colt loads were brutal compared to 44 mag and I never pulled the trigger on the 454.
I think they are the gun to use if you use the big end of the reloading table.

I had a 5.5" Redhawk .45 that I bought new about 12 years ago. Was built for heavy duty use that's for sure. Mine had over-sized chambers though, and would expand the brass a bit too much for my liking. I have since sold the gun, and as I recall, got $600 for it, so at $500 that's not too bad a price.

I've got one of the newer 4 inchers in 45 Colt.

For me, it is the definitive woods gun. I've owned lots of Rugers in 45 Colt, but this one is definitely a keeper.

Re: DA Redhawk in .45 Long Colt

I have a 7.5" Redhawk. They are stronger than even Taffin would lead you to believe. I have a letter here from Brian Pearce at Handloader magazine. He had written an article on loading the .45 colt to different power levels, and had stated that the Redhawk could and would take 50,000 PSI loads. I wrote him personally to double check that it wasn't a misprint, and he wrote back assuring me it wasn't. He mentioned being witness to destruction tests and how much pressure Big Red can take without trouble. He told me he loads his personal Redhawk to that level regularly. The loads listed in that article in Handloader will make the .44 mag look like a .38 special in comparison.
