NJ governor orders flags flown at half staff for Whitney Houston

NO WAY! While I agree she may have been a Icon, but she was no Hero! She was just another person that could not handle the fame that came along with her career and turned to drugs and alcohol. If they are going to fly the flag at half mast for her, then they better be prepared to fly it at half mast for every Tom Dick and Harry that dies of an overdose.

Criticism of the Gov. is appropriate. I liked Whitney Houston's singing. But I do not consider that she or any other entertainment personality merits such an action.

It has always been customary for States to fly the flag at half-mast, for citizen's of that State that have died, and contributed to it's well-being and history.

But in this case, as Mike already stated, it's pandering to a certain group, that would cause a LOT of trouble, legal and otherwise, if this "honor" was not bestowed upon her.

I'm sure they'll do the same here in Kentucky, when Cassius Clay dies.....people forget that he was a draft-dodger, and a member of a group that hates the ideals of America (Black Muslim)....."Revisionist History" has been in full-swing with THAT one.

I believe that flags being flown at half-staff should be reserved for only the highest of standards. Every soldier that has given his/her life in defense of this country should have that honor, but not some drug-addled entertainer.....just my opinion.

Does a governor have the right to have the American Flag flown at half staff ?

    Yes he does unfortunately.

In this instance I feel it is a kiss @$$ move on this governors part to appease a certain segment of his voters and it smells to high heaven.

    My thoughts and mine alone.

Sorry and no disrespect to anyone but,,, This should be for MILITARY and heads of state. If not then where were the half-mast flags for... Dale Earnhardt, John Wayne, Andy Rooney, and anyones family member who has passed away? Several years ago we had flags at half mast in my small town and a majority of the streets lined with people for a local boy killed in action on his way to his final resting place. THAT was appropriate for the situation!
