Let me preface this thread with the fact I am a loyal American, served my country honorably, and LOVE the USA.
That being said, I also have a brain and like to use it occasionally.
This sometimes cause me grief because I have no problem saying what I know to be true.
...and I also have no problem calling out BS propaganda when I see it. No matter what side is spewing it out.
So a few days ago I saw this story that has been repeated almost verbatim as if they were reading from a script.
(edited for a better link)
"Bear" bombers flying close to US territory. Grab the kids, run and hide! The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!
First off, as a sailor my ships were overflow by their Bear bombers all the time.
The facts are...they are NOT bombers at all.
They USED to be bombers back in the late 50's and early 60's, but since then they have found better used for them as long range RECON aircraft.
When I was in the western pacific they used to over fly us all the time and took off from the airbase we built in Da Nang, Vietnam.
They now use it as a base for their pacific long range missions.
Location, location, location.
The counter rotating props of this monster plane make it fairly fuel efficient for long range missions.
They always called ahead and requested permission to overfly us and usually it was granted so all us squids could get topside with our cameras and get some good shots. We also sent up an F-14 as an escort to guide them right to the spot.
Once the crewman of one of them put a foldout of that month's Penthouse pet up against the window for the F-14 pilot to see. Then they both gave each other thumbs ups.
These are RECON planes, NOT bombers, and no one was in any danger at any time.
These BS reports are just fear mongering propaganda coming from our side.
It is done all the time without incident.
I also once had some really good up-close camera shots of the Russian cruiser Valavostok, but they got swiped.
YES, Virginia, our government ALSO engages in its own shameless and unfounded propaganda to stir up the masses.
This does not make me a disloyal American, it makes me a THINKING and EXPERIENCED American.
The type citizen all governments fear.
Fake news, like a pendulum and Richard Simmons, also swings both ways.

Your link has devolved to a request that you subscribe to their piece of trash (at least for me). Consider the publisher of the information: people who don't know the difference between a model M14 and an evil black rifle. You can't expect them to know the difference between classifications of Russian aircraft. They probably don't know there was such a thing as "Janes" publications. Hate doing their homework for them but they might start with this: https://www.ihs.com/products/janes-a...e-defence.html .
As well you know, the "other" air forces are always testing our response patterns, trying to find out any detection flaws. Been going on since the first balloon was sent aloft as a recon platform.

^^^ Fixed it ^^^ up above.
I was a bit worried about all the popups.
At the time, the Fox website only showed a US F-22 raptor fighter and not the Russian Bear.
...but....it IS easier to read. My apologies to all.
let's try this one.

When I was on the America we tested the Russian response time by launching an Alpha strike from Vestfjord in Norway.
We caught them totally unawares.
We lost their shadow vessels by driving right through each and every storm we saw in the north Atlantic on our way there.
Some of those storms were pretty hairy.
Once I stuck my head out past the blast doors on the hangar bay and looked UP at a wave we were about to plow through!
The best way to describe the experience is to be in an elevator going up and down 12 stories for three weeks straight.
Even some old salts were starting to loose it.

Being a loyal American does not require, and is not the same as, being loyal to the government. So I chose the first.

Its the same BS when they made a big deal about Russian Aircraft buzzing the U.S Ships . My retired Navy Bro in law says they do it all the time and any hostile would be taken out long before they reached the ship or fleet.

When I was on the USS Midway in the late 70's the Soviets tried to fly over our carrier group often primarily with Bears, but sometimes with Badgers. To the OP, you're correct that by then Bears were considered to be intelligence gathering threats, not bombers. The Badgers though were thought to be armed. We were also constantly trailed by spy trawlers and likely subs too, but those we couldn't see!
