A simple voyage into a gun locker goes past the stops!

Having purchased a new gun, I decided earlier to find a spot in one of my locking cabinets to store it when not being carried, simple enough. It would be simple if I ignored everything else and simply found a space, but no, that would be too easy! The first thing I notice is the desiccant container is showing pink and that's not good, so I open up all of my cabinets and remove the containers for a trip to the oven. That's when I find a handful of spare magazines, most of which I immediately identify, but there was the inevitable; "What does this go to?"! So I dig around and find its owner, then decide to mark it with a Sharpie for future reference. Why are so many of these unused mags full of ammo doing nothing more than weakening the springs? Probably loaded to use on a range trip that never happened; unload all of them and find boxes to store the rounds….find a place to store the ammo boxes. Why do I have two pistols without a protective silicone sock? Because I don't have any extra silicone socks, so I go out to a box in the garage full of old clean cotton socks with holes that make great dust sleeves, mark that off the list!

I spot a plastic bag of something on the bottom of a long gun cabinet and have to move my Hi-Point 40 carbine to get to it, a fire starter kit (?), not sure how it got there, but cool, move it to another accessory shelf, noticing when I grabbed the carbine, the tactical light didn't turn on by the front handle 'touch pad', not good. Take the batteries out and test them, they appear good, replace them and miraculously they now work, but that means I have to test all the lights and Red Dots on all of my guns just to be sure. That completed I spy a slim box on top of some special handgun ammo and when I pull it out, the contents spill out onto the carpeted floor, CRAP, my laser bore sighting kit! Gather up all the parts and decide I need to test the batteries while I'm at it, good to go! Found a Crown Royal bag in the top shelf by another stack of loaded mags (AR-15 and 30 Cal rifle mags), what's in the bag? A half dozen old watches, including two gold plated pocket watches that my dad had before I was born and I had forgotten about them, nice find! Another cloth bag of new, but low quality tactical folding knives, items I've been given as door prizes or bonus offerings from mail order gun sites; again, something I'd forgotten. Found a bag of old various 38 Special cartridges my dad had in numerous old ash trays around his house when he died and I packed up and threw them into a plastic ziploc bag. I spot checked a few guns in socks for any traces of rust and thankfully didn't find any, but on a Dan Wesson 357 fixed sight revolver, the stocks were very dry after I was forced to strip the glossy finish from a year ago after some gun cleaner got on them and made a mess. So, I didn't hesitate, put some wood oil on them and put it back into storage, back to whatever it was now that I had originally intended to do. Eventually I found a space for my new Ruger American to reside when I'm not carrying her, but it took me well over an hour and a half to do it! The desiccant containers are cooked and cooled, time to put them back in place, then lock everything up. Not exactly what I had planned today for entertainment, but all in all, not such a bad way to burn some time on a Sunday afternoon! :D

Rediscovered treasures... that always happens to me whenever I go to look for something I that I need now.

Find what I'm looking for that's needed now? Heck no... I find all the stuff that I needed 6 months ago (or more), that I couldn't find any traces of when I was searching for it back then. So then those postponed projects now get moved back to the front burner to work on and the project that I was working on, well... gets put on the back burner, until I find whatever it was I needed for it... 6 months from now, when I'm looking for something else.

I beginning to suspect it's all a plot by my wife to drive me into "the home".

Yep. Know the feeling. I update and check everything at least once a year. I schedule for a rainy day as it literally takes all day. Then when you find that gun that didn't remember, that just amazes me. However, It never crosses my mind I have too many. I just need to go to the range more.

Stacy, thanks so very much for this post.
I've been looking all over the house for a set of Altamont grips that I couldn't find no matter how hard I looked.
You mentioned digging out a Crown Royal bag in your post and voila, now I remember where the grips are. I put them in my Crown Royal bag and put it in the storage closet.

You're simply amazing. Almost like Karmac!

Thanks again,
Gregory

P.S. Dog gone it, I found the Crown Royal bag, but the grips weren't in there after all. The quest continues!

Dang! the only thing I have in a Crown Royal bag is .... Crown Royal. Don't drink it myself, so can't even remember who I brought it in for. Man, I gotta get a grip!!

You are far from alone. Although I've never had one as interesting as yours I've accidentally found lots of firearm related items while looking for something completely different.

Not long ago I was a little lazy and put of doing laundry. Opened the dresser drawer in the morning and grabbed the last undershirt. Low and behold there, underneath the shirt, was a loaded G17 mag full of Gold Dots. How did that get there? I hardly ever let my laundry go this long and I certainly don't remember hiding the mag nor would I accidentally put it there under all the shirts. But I brought it there for a reason so let's do the smart thing and put it where I'll remember. I open up the big center drawer where I typically keep random bedroom stuff like watch boxes or old cell phones. Kinda like a bedroom junk drawer. Well there in the drawer is an AK47 bayonet! Sweet! It's like finding free stuff ..... but the question still stands....why is it there? I don't remember bringing bayonets into the bedroom! So I go down into the basement to put it with my AK accessories. While there I remember I have a second one somewhere so I dig around for a minute and find it! Awesome! This confirms that I indeed bought it and remembered about it and where I last saw it! Curious as to how sharp it is I look around for something to poke it through. I spot a box in the corner and walk over to it. When I do I spot another box behind it. It must be empty and probably needs to go in the trash so I poke it with the bayonet. Soon as I do the bayonet hits something hard. Ok weird...What's in here? Open up the box and find 1000 rounds of 7.62x39! I think I bought this over a year ago but why is it sitting here when the res of my ammo is no where near. Now I'm reminded that a few weeks ago I realized I was missing several boxes of 38spl. I was doing inventory and put them somewhere and forgot where. So now I'm digging around and getting pretty frustrated. Meanwhile I'm finding random loose rounds everywhere. There's 7 rounds of 45acp HP which must have came from my 1911 or Sig 220. I must have unloaded the gun/mag and didn't know what to do with the ammo so put it here not being able to find the original box. Near by I find 9 rounds of same ammo, which probably came from my HK USP45 compact, and 3 rounds 9mm fmj! Where'd that come from? Half a box of 40s&w. Finally I got to a small cardboard box with a bag over it. Take the bag off and find a few VZ58 mags and two Sig 220 mags still in their packages. Under that I find the boxes of 38 I was looking for! After that I needed a drink

An update! Yesterday morning I was reading Rule303's comments which had me snickering as I drank my coffee, but suddenly, like an emergency signal flare going off in my brain, I realized that when I was going though all my items a few days back, I did not see a spare after-market magazine for a High Standard Sport King 22LR pistol. I can't explain the delayed response, but it was a full-on search for most of the day as I visited and revisited any and every gun related storage receptacle I own, nothing found! I even contacted my son to see if it might have turned up at his house as he's packing for a move and I've left my arsenal with him when out of town for vacations, nothing. Finally at the end of the day, exhausted, frustrated and borderline angry, I threw in the towel and watched recorded episodes of "Live PD" from this past weekend. As I began to relax, I methodically went through my search activities to-date, trying to come up with a spot, any spot that I had missed. Then something came to me as a possible search location, but I was too tired to deal with it then, it would have to wait for this morning when temps were cool. In my garage I have boxes with long gun sleeves and zippered handgun rugs in storage. My hope was that at sometime in the past, I might have packed the spare mag in a gun rug with the pistol and forgot about it. A long shot, but something to check. After breakfast I told my wife I'd be in the garage for awhile, vainly searching for the lost magazine. The box to be searched holds between 25 and 30 rugs, I began to unzip them one at a time and believe it or not, the very last one in the bottom of the box, stuck deep inside was the missing magazine, WHOOO HOOOO! Yesterday as I roiled in defeat, I thought to myself it's no big deal, just buy another one and be done with it. As I looked at all the go-to sites for spare mags, I found that the cheapest available was $42 bucks, YIKES! That was depressing, but it also gave me reason to keep searching and I'm glad I did! :D

For the record, the Crown Royal bag was given to me by a friend, Empty!
I don't ever recall drinking any Crown Royal in my lifetime.
But then again, I haven't consumed any whiskey for nearly 30 years, so I might have had some Crown Royal, and just don't remember.
The bag has held pistol grips in it ever since I got it.

Gregory, I'm in the same boat, I don't know where I found this bag, but it was empty when I got it and I too can't recall ever drinking Crown Royal! On the other hand, if Jim Beam came in a bag, I'd have enough sacks to fill a cotton trailer! ;)
