I have to ask this ... didn't you discuss how much it was going to cost BEFORE you hired him??? And didn't that include something along the lines of either how much for the task, or an hourly rate and an estimate??

Ya know ... I get those things before they even do an oil change on my car!!!

    Just sayin...
Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

The law firm I deal with does so much under retainer. After that fee is ate up. Then I pay a hourly rate. So far they never cheated me or anyone else that I know. They are a very reputable law firm. You never know what the final bill may be.
They may give me a ball park estimate xxxx to xxxxxx. Then mention it could be more if it takes more time. I have NO problems with that. I have been dealing with them a long time. With their clients they are more than fair. In the past that law firm has handled issues for me and lost money. That law firm will really go to the extreme, if they need to.
Great guys and gals in that law firm. So to answer your question. With that law firm. I never ask how much ahead of time.

I'll give you a example of that law firm. When my Mom was in the hospital. Her trust (will) was jack up big time. All of the successors mentioned in that trust, things like, If someone died etc. who would be next in line to handle things. Mom would just cross stuff out with a pen. Or initial and date it. That may have been ok. However plenty of room for intent was a accident looking for a place to happen.

I called the attorney I deal with at that law firm. He was busy that day and it was late in the day.. The next morning three attorneys and a notary were in Moms hospital room redoing all her legal affairs. They had it all back to her the next day. Not many places would jump like that. Their fee for that was less than half Mom originally paid to have her trust setup. So compared to the law firm Mom deals with they worked for less than fifty cents on the dollar.

And then they discovered politics where they could get EVERYONE to pay for their nefarious bull****........

Lawyers are the mercenaries! They are the essential element in navigating the preponderance of laws.

A lawyer dies and appears in front of St. Peter for a hearing to determine his final destiny.

St Peter starts looking over the records and says to the lawyer: Well, it appears you’ve lead a long and profitable life. How did you mange to live to be 96 years old.

The lawyer jumps up and shouts… there must be some mistake, I’m only 44 years old. You obviously have the wrong guy Please allow me to return and finish out my natural life.

St. Peters says.. Hold on a minute, I see what caused the confusion , here in heaven, we go by the hours you bill.

It was so cold here the other day, all the lawyers standing out front of the courthouse had their hands in their OWN pockets!
