Remington Model 4 - Single Shot in 32 Rimfire

This is an old Remington Model 4 that my wife's grandfather had in his garage for years. The barrel states 32 Short or Long R.F. Smooth Bore
Does anyone know the history of these guns?

Very, very nice! I have a 4 in .22 rimfire, which I have not fired in 10 years probably. When young I refinished the wood (nobody is perfect) and I kind of ruined it's collector value, but it's a tack driver. The drop breech an interesting action, amazingly simple. I'd love to find another like it. I understand the rifle in .32 is a lot harder to find, neither one exactly common or easily found. I've never heard of a .32 smoothbore, what's that all about? My .22 has a rifled barrel.0

    Geoff,

I wish mine was in 22.. at least I could shoot it! I have no idea why they made this thing with a smooth bore barrel .. very strange - no wonder it is rare !

I see references to shot cartridges with a quick google search, so it must have once been an option as a barn rifle, a rat rifle thing. I have seen several .32 rimfires with rifled barrels over the years and have always wished that someone out there would start manufacturing this obsolete cartridge again.

According to Fjestad's Blue Book the .32 smoothbore was introuced around 1911 & your rifle is valued around $500. Old Western Scrounger used to import .32 rimfire cartridges (& may still). I've seen a couple that were sleeved to shoot .22's. I love the old Remington rolling block's, my takedown .22 is hanging on the wall nearby as I type this.

I wonder if it is smart to have this relined to 22 and reblued - the bluing on the barrel has surface rust pits, but the stocks are in good shape - no cracks etc..
The gun has sentimental value - so I would like to keep it keep it and not sell it.. but I dont want to dump a huge amount of money into it either..

Not sure if I just clean it up and leave it as a wall hanger or have t redone so IC an at least shoot it once in a while.. decisions.. decisions.. ...

But since it is still a smooth bore.. what would I be gaining by going to a .32 CF? I dont think I can re-line it to .32.. not enought barrel thickness for that ..That is why I was thinking a reline to .22 FR would be my best option .. if the original barrel was rifled, I would have more caliber options to go with ..
