    Pietta 1858 Remington Question

    Hello All!

Does anyone know what size cap is to be used with this revolver??

I tried a #10 and the caps explode with shrapnel all over the place.

Should it bottom out on the nipple or not??

    Thanks!
    Dave

Depends on the nipples you have on the gun, amigo. You might want to try another cap.

    Re: Pietta 1858 Remington Question

Well, you actually only have two choices. Number 10's are what I use on all my cap and ball replicas. If number 11's fit better, you can use them instead. My experience is that the 11's always fall off when the cylinder rotates unless you give them a "pinch" before you install them.
Now, with all that being said, there are probably variances in cap dimensions among the different brands. I would stick with the 10's for now but maybe try another brand and see if the problem goes away. Yes, my caps sometimes blow themselves to bits as well. Cap and ball revolvers were hardly a perfected design form. They were mostly only popular until something better came along like the metallic cartridge.

I know with my Pietta 1860 Army number 10's are too small and don't work well but Number 11's fit perfectly. Try a few different versions to see what works.

There are slight ID size differences between various brands of caps, too.

This may have more to do with the amount of priming material dabbed inside than the thickness or dia. of the cap, though. If you've been using Remington, then try some CCI. My '51 Navy prefers RWS for the best fit.

A properly-fitting cap seems to stay together better than one that is too loose or too tight - not always, but generally. My RWS caps seem tougher and hang together a little better, too.

    Re: Pietta 1858 Remington Question

    Dave,

I've found that some of the earlier Euro-inport percussion reproductions had nipples with metric dimensions instead of American Standard. This was particularly true of some 1960s-70s Navy Arms repros that I owned. Most knowledgable shooters bought replacement nipples from Dixie Gun Works, but being cheap and lazy, I went looking for European-mfg. caps instead. That seemed to solve that particular Navy Arms problem.
