LOL....the bird dogs usually took care of the fur bearers, but those "soon to be boots" use to get into the horse feed on a rather regular basis. 'Course in East Texas, I heard but never saw one myself, that rattlers were around. Dad use to keep the horse feed in 55 gallon drums with lock down lids, if my sister or I forgot to lock them down it never failed that something would get into them. One time Dad opened the door on the tack shed, where we kept the feed also, and a rat snake dropped from the rafters....don't know what he was doing....but Dad ran back to the house and got that Peacemaker of his....no more snake.....but when a cotton mouth came up through the bathroom sink....well Dad cornered him behind the water heater....amazing what a .22 will do when a cotton mouth bites it![]()

A long handled shovel is my weapon of choice for rattlers. The shovel is an all-in-one tool.......whack, they're dispatched...chop, off with the head...dig, a hole and bury the severed head............leave the carcas laying out somewhere for Coyotes, hawks, vultures, etc.
