Who is a fan of big guns?

I'm talkin' WAY bigger than average:

Now, to some of us former Squids, these ain't the biggest, but a 5"-50 twin turret brings a butt-load of whoop-ass!

    George,

In one of my former, more adventurous lives, it's smaller brother, the 3" gun was all I could stand in relatively close proximity. The concussion just ripples across one's whole body! Mates on battlewagons told me their skipper forbade anyone on a weather deck (outside the ship's superstrcture) when the 16" Naval rifles were fired. They used to get a warning horn signal through-out the ship before salvos commenced! Those big guns could unleash hell with a circular probabilty error (accuracy) of about 3 meters out to 27-30 miles, throwing a shell with the mass of a VW beetle, using analog computers for fire control accuracy. Not to shabby for WWII technology!

    Mick,

Dunno (I believe they were "WLR" with a BIG can of Bullseye), but Uncle Sugar had a whole bunch of both! Dies were er, ah... "special order/call for pricing": 1-800-Pentagon.

I think my gun club would frown on using them at our indoor range!

It's just a good thing that these guns never went to the military surplus market. Some "custom gunsmith" would have cut the barrel and sold them as the Ultimate Self Defense gun. And he would have had a market....

Indeed, sometimes it takes a "big gun".

While I have never served in the Armed Forces, the "big gun" that ALWAYS impresses me when I see footage of them being fired are the 16" guns on the Iowa-class battleships.
