Thinking of a new plinker ... comments on a Ruger 10/22

My local gun dealer has a nice used Ruger 10/22 for sale at a price I'm willing to spend. I'm thinking this might be a nice plinker, with the 10 shot magazine and .22LR ammo. It seems to be scope ready, so this would give me a scoped bolt-action rifle, something I don't have.

Any reason why I shouldn't buy it?? Not really interested in alternatives, since I like to support this guy, want a used gun, and he has this one in stock. Just looking for any thoughts about possibly passing on it.

Go for it. Nothing better than a proven quality plinker.

If its a 10-22 its semiauto the bolt action is most likley a 77-22
I have both and they are good guns.

I changed a 10-22 to a .17mk two ,fun gun ammo expensive tho. My other 10-22 is a blast!
I think you will enjoy it!

I bought a USED 10/22 in 1980 and put a $19.99 scope on it. Shooting .22 shorts, loading them one at a time, I have brought down 4 feral cats with 4 shots from 30-75 yards. I put 500-100 rounds a year through it and have NEVER cleaned it, or had a failure of any kind.

I don't know about never cleanning it....because I clean my guns every time I shoot them. (1 or 100 rounds) If I don't shoot , I just wipe it off.

Now on to the 10/22. I bought mine in '98, and still like to shoot it. I got a cheaper 1" Bushnell 4x scope on it, for about $25 at Walmart. Fun gun to shoot at animated targets (beer cans, clay pidgeons, spent shotgun shells.....). When shooting at a target @ 25 yds., I can cover the group with a nickel. (Almost as good as my Savage Mk. I .... Dime sized groups )

I give it a quick cleanning ....run a patch down the bore, brush it out and wipe it down most of the time. After about 500 rds., I tear it down (with the instruction book at my side)........it can be a challenge to get back together....but so.... far so good! It is a great plinker, pretty accurate too......at least with the scope. I can't use iron sights anymore, so it's a scope or Red Dot, for me. The Red Dot is alot of fun too.......allowing rapid fire, and quick on the target.

I don't think that any .22 rifle shooter should be without a Ruger 10/22. It has tons of accessories to customize your rifle with, if you want something special, and like to work on guns. You can spend a lot of money.....or just keep it stock (me). All my Ruger .22's are great plinkers. (Ruger Std. Auto MK.III .22 and the 10/22 now........but I have have had 5 of them.)
Any Ruger rifle or handgun is a great gun for a reasonable price. If I had more room.....and more money.....I'd have a lot more Rugers. Bob

I have two Ruger 10-22's. One scoped with a cheap used gun show Burris and one 1976 centennial I gave to my Dad for his B-day. The centennial came back to me when Dad passed in 1994. Both have well over 1000's of rounds thru them and are reliable, IMHO very accurate. Both have accounted for numerous rabbits and squirrls and a skunk or two on the farm. Get it-shoot the stuffins outa it and ENJOY!
Both mine seem to preffer CCI Stingers so buy a few different brands and see what it likes best. Then stock up...Good cheap fun.

I started shooting these in 1972 and currently don't own one, but have my eye out for another. I did buy a new one in 2008 and gave it to my ex-brother-law because I blew up the magazine in his in 1972 by using some Eastern-Block ammo I somehow came into possession of...it was an 'event' as they say! Great guns, reliable, fun, you can't go wrong if you're comfortable with the price, you'll enjoy it!

Smooth move, coming on here and asking if you should buy a gun. Like anyone would say no?

Get a 50 round mag, a buddy similarly equipped and a dueling tree. Great fun!
